A Gentle Guide to Your In-Home Newborn Session

The Best Time to Capture These First Days

The newborn stage is fleeting — measured in days, not months.
For this reason, newborn sessions are best held within the first two weeks of life.
During this tender window, your baby is still wrapped in the memory of the womb. Sleep comes easily. They naturally curl allowing me to capture them in the cutest positions that only newborns can be in.
This is the season where everything is soft, delicate, and brand new — and that’s what we’re preserving.

What to Expect on the Day

A newborn session is unhurried and baby-led.
You can expect the photoshoot to last up to two hours, allowing plenty of time for feeds, nappy changes, cuddles, and settling. There is no rush — we move at your baby’s pace.
Newborns love warmth, so we’ll keep the space cosy and comfortable. Depending on the season, I may ask for the heater or air-conditioning to be adjusted, and I often bring a small space heater to help keep baby relaxed and sleepy.
My approach to newborn photography is natural, lifestyle-based, and light-filled. I work primarily with natural light, so many images will be captured near windows or in the brightest areas of your home.
      Your session may include:
      Snuggling together in bed
Quiet moments in your nursing chair
Making a cup of tea while baby rests in your arms
      Bath time or gentle cuddles
Intimate close-ups of your newborn being held by the people who love them most
These images are about connection — the way you hold them, look at them, and exist together in these early days.

      What to Wear

All wraps, blankets, headpieces, and newborn props are provided and carefully curated for a timeless, neutral aesthetic.
For parents and siblings, simplicity is key.
Avoid logos, bold patterns, or bright colours. Soft neutrals like white, beige, cream, black, or gentle earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your baby.
      For Dad:
A plain t-shirt or relaxed button-up works perfectly.
      For Mum:
Singlets, soft knits, or off-the-shoulder dresses are beautiful for skin-to-skin moments. Flowy, comfortable pieces photograph best and allow you to move freely with baby.
As part of your session, you also have complimentary access to a curated wardrobe of breastfeeding-friendly, postpartum-flattering dresses.

A small but important detail — your hands will be photographed closely while holding your baby. Take a moment to ensure nails and hands are how you’d like them captured. If wearing your wedding rings is meaningful to you, remember to put them on.

      Preparing Your Home

Photographing your baby in their first home adds a layer of meaning that can never be recreated. These images will hold memories not just of how your baby looked — but of where your story began.
Your home does not need to be styled or spotless. The beauty lies in the connection, not perfection.
Simply choose 2–3 spaces that feel special and have lovely natural light — perhaps:
Your bed with soft morning light
      A cosy couch
      A window-filled corner
      A staircase or front porch
Give those areas a light tidy by clearing surface clutter like bedside tables or countertops.
If you have any sentimental items — a special blanket, outfit, or heirloom — set them aside for us to include.
The session can last up to two hours, so having snacks on hand (for little ones and yourself) is always a good idea. Breastfeeding, especially, is thirsty and hungry work.

      Before the Session Begins

If possible, dress baby in something easy to remove, feed baby and ensure baby has a clean nappy before I arrive – this helps us begin right away. A full, settled baby is more likely to drift into that deep, sleepy state we love for newborn photos.
But if plans change — that’s okay. We take baby’s lead!
