Pregnancy is different for everyone. Some love it, some find it challenging.

But one thing that we can’t deny is the fact that the body changes… significantly! I mean, you are carrying and nourishing a small human in there… this just blows my mind.

No matter how you are feeling about your looks during pregnancy… it is such a unique time and needs to be documented… not only for yourself to look back on to appreciate how amazing your body is… but it’s also for your kids. I don’t think I have ever seen any photos of my own mother pregnant with me. It would have been so surreal to see an image of my mum with me before I was born.

So, with more and more people booking me for some professional maternity photos, I wanted to write up some of my top tips to help you prepare for the shoot:

Best Time To Capture Your Bump

I usually recommend booking in your maternity photoshoot in for when you are around 30-34 weeks pregnant. You will have a beautiful round shape, which will be perfect for taking photos and you should still be able to move around comfortably.

Leaving it too close to the due date could mean that it may limit your movement during the photoshoot, could feel uncomfortable and you may risk missing out completely in the case that your baby unexpectedly arrives early.

If you are expecting multiples, schedule in at around 24 weeks.

      What To Wear

Consider the weather, season and location of the photoshoot in deciding your outfit/s. Pick outfits that make you feel beautiful and help show off your bump. Long flowy dresses that have an empire waistline can help with this. If you are having photos taken with other people like your partner and kids, try and coordinate your outfits. If you plan to have your bare pregnancy bump captured, keep in mind bringing along outfits that will make it easy to do this. For example a robe or button shirt or crop top and skirt.

      How to Pose

I will help guide you with poses to best capture your beautiful bump, whether they are solo photos, photos with your partner or photos with your kids.

Some small tips you can be aware of are placement of your hands and legs to accentuate your bump elegantly.

If you bend the leg that is closest facing the camera, this can help shape your body in a flattering way for the photos.

Placing your hand below, above or using both hands above and below your bump are ways to define and bring the focus on your bump.

Placing a hand on your back and arching your back can help create shape and define your bump, especially when photographing a silhouette.

Taking photos from different angles will also help create flattering photos and I will help guide you through these.

If you have any other questions, I am more than happy to answer them.
